People Rarely Succeed Unless They Have Fun In What They Are Doing!
by Musthafa Ebadi on April 8th, 2014

I am sure you have heard the title of this post many times and in many different contexts. It was coined by the great writer and lecturer Dale Carnegie.
When I started my career in people management one of the first quotes that struck with mewas on the wall of one of my peers that read “Find something you enjoy doing and you will never work for a day in your life”.

When I came back to my office I wrote on my notepad and have kept that page with me ever since.

Looking back it now I believe it couldn’t have been written better. I have had the good fortune of working jobs that I really love and over the years it doesn’t feel like I have been working it all. I have had Sundays where I miss work and show up in the office before 7AM following Monday just because I want to get back to thick of things.  I miss my job during my vacation days and often cant wait to get back. Yup call me crazy!
Don’t get me wrong as like every one of you I also have good days and bad days. There are days that I ask myself “when will this or that end” or “here we go again” etc etc.  However when I step back and think about what I do and how much I love my job and my responsibility of managing people, managing clients, and managing financial I realize that how lucky I am to be doing what I am doing. My good days outweigh my bad days exponentially!

Often when I am in career coaching sessions my first questions isn’t how much money you want to make or what title you want to have? I ask my people what they would LIKE to do.  I have literally had instances where I have told someone to go figure out what they LIKE and then comeback and we will put a plan to get them there. Why do I do that? Its because I truly believe that if they have figured out what they would like to do based on responsibilities and duties of the role (not compensation) I can truly set them up for success.

Most of the people who are job hunting tell me about the job that would interest them and it often starts with phrases like “If the salary is XX…..”  or “Even though I don’t like my job I don’t want to change because I have 6 weeks vacation…..” or  “ I have been here for over 10 years and will not get the seniority I have here…..” etc.  When I ask them how much they love – not like but love – what they do I rarely get “Oh I love my job!”  Part of the reason is that those who love their job aren’t job hunting.

My suggestion to anyone who doesn’t want to work a single day for the rest of their life is they should first find out what they would love doing day in and day out. Then study, train, and/or work hard to get it. Whether its owning a business, leading a team, being a journalist, dabbling in politics, writing books, teaching, or practicing medicine findout what is that you would love to do everyday!

And when you love and have fun in what you do to earn a living success will follow you in spades!
