Your Team Needs Structure!
by Musthafa Ebadi on May 19th, 2014

If you have the honor & privilege of leading teams you know that every individual on your team is different.

Each one of them are motivated differently, they react differently, and they absorb knowledge and coaching differently.  Over 10 years ago I was thought by one of my managers that instead of asking  our people to adapt and adjust to our style of management we should try to adapt to their style of performance! It has been an invaluable lesson for me and one which I have relied heavily on ever since. I have been blessed with some amazing teams and one of the ways that I have been able to extract the best out of them is I have managed each one of them to their style of how they perform and respond. I have never had blanket style approach of my own. In this case one size really doesn’t fit all.

However one area that should be consistent, firm, and same for everyone is the structure of your team. Starting from your basic process to one of the complicated methodologies you should have a structure in place that is consistent and easy to understand.

Often times I have observed managers having a gigantic vision,  enormous ideas, and creative genius and yet they are not successful in what they want to achieve. It usually comes down to not having a structure. And by structure I dont mean red tape! I mean a framework that your team can rely on as directive and guidance when needed.

A properly structured team is like a carefully designed building. Once the bases are designed and the parameters are set you could build as many floors on it as you want.

Evaluate your current team's structure and see if you have the right pieces in place? If you dont then start by moving people, processes, and tools around.  At times it will be tough, excruciating, and draining but at the end its worth every minute that you spend in trying to get the proper structure.
